When it comes to Star Wars, it seems there are two major groups of people: those who love it and those who don’t care for it. I’m happy to count myself within the first group, and I’ll tell you why. As a mom raising multicultural kids, among the reasons I love this amazing saga are the many Star Wars lessons we can teach our children that can be applied to our multicultural life and global worldview.
You could say that my love for the Star Wars saga started very early in my life. In fact, when the first movie was released on May 25, 1977, I was just over 3 weeks old. My father became a fan of the movie and the other two films of the trilogy that were released within the next six years. Although I didn’t think about the wisdom and Star Wars lessons imparted within the first trilogy, I know I had watched them before the 90s.
I don’t know how many times I watched these three movies growing up, but I remember paying for my own ticket and going to see Episode one in 1999 when I was 23 years old. At that point, I was aware and able to learn from the many Star Wars lessons within that film, and also to go back and watch the old ones to ignite my memory.
Because it is the holidays and I was invited to join this amazing giveaway, valued in over $600 for one lucky fan to get all the toys and collectibles in the galaxy, I decided to share with you about the Star Wars lessons we can teach our multicultural children. I have picked my favorite 7 quotes from the movies that help illustrate values that are more important than ever in order for us to raise global citizens.
5 Star Wars Lessons For Moms
Raising Multicultural Children
The Value of Heritage
“When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be. The Force runs strong in your family. Pass on what you have learned.” — Yoda
As a Star Wars nerd, I LOVE Yoda. Today more than ever, we must teach our children about the strength of their heritage, their family and the importance of passing down our ancestral knowledge to the newer generations.
The Value of Friendship
“Oh, my dear friend. How I’ve missed you.” — C-3PO
One of my favorite things of the Star Wars saga is the friendship between R2-D2 and C-3PO. They care for each other, they argue, and make you laugh. You can talk to your kids about the endearing relationship between them. How they look, think, and act differently, but still, care for one another.
The Value of Democracy
“We must keep our faith in the Republic. The day we stop believing democracy can work is the day we lose it.” — Queen Jamillia
In these times when it seems the whole world is trying to reverse decades of progress and values, it is up to us to teach our kids about how important is to maintain democracy and the values of freedom around the world. We must remember it is up to them to continue and build on those values.
The Value of Confidence
“Do. Or do not. There is no try.” — Yoda
Encouraging kids to do their best, to engage wholeheartedly and to put their complete effort in the things they want to achieve.
The Value of Love
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you.” — Yoda
This is a timeless quote from Yoda. Unfortunately, nowadays there are many real-life examples of what fear of others looks like. Among all the lessons we can teach our kids, this is the most important one. There is a path to harmony, fairness, and justice, and it comes from love and acceptance, not fear.
